Jose Aldo Defends UFC Featherweight Title Against Josh Grispi At UFC 125

We now have official word that former WEC — and now current UFC featherweight champion — Jose Aldo will make his first defense inside the Octagon against Josh Grispi at UFC 125. The fight for the featherweight title will serve as the night’s co-main event alongside Frankie Edgar taking on Gray Maynard for the lightweight title.

While some had hoped Aldo’s first UFC action would be with Kenny Florian at 155, Dana White quickly shot the notion down, claiming Aldo and his camp had decided to stick around in the newly minted featherweight division. Grispi isn’t exactly the big name I had expected for his UFC debut, but I think he’s more than enough of a serviceable opponent for Aldo.

Grispi is currently riding a ten fight win streak and hasn’t been defeated since 2006, when he was only eighteen year old. Since making his WEC debut back in February of 2008, Grispi has impressed with wins over Mark Hominick, Micha Miller, Jens Pulver, and LC Davis. That stretch of wins — along with the fact that he hasn’t gone to a decision since 2007 — is why I think the UFC brass made a pretty solid matchup here. I don’t expect Grispi to pull off the upset, but he may have as good a chance as anyone in the UFC’s featherweight division.
