Ending months, if not years, of speculation, Colorado has fired head coach Dan Hawkins. According to CBS 4 in Denver, and confirmed by Vic Lombardi, Hawkins will meet with the team tomorrow to discuss his future. The only question, according to the report, is whether he finishes out the year or not.
Dan Hawkins Out As Colorado Head Coach
If his termination is effective immediately, CBS 4 expects assistant Brian Cabral to take over. Cabral has been with Colorado for 22 years and was promoted to associate head coach in 2008.
Just yesterday, the Denver Post was told Hawkins would keep his job through the season. Hawkins’ son, Cody Hawkins, is the only scholarship quarterback on the Buffaloes roster and athletic director Mike Bohn reportedly wanted to keep continuity with the quarterback. All that, apparently, went out the window today.
Hawkins guided the Buffalos to a 19-39 record during his five-year tenure as head coach. He never had a winning season, nor made a bowl game, finishing with a 6-7 record in his best year.
The Buffaloes have had an up-and-down season this year, winning at home against Hawa'ii and Georgia, but dropping all six Big 12 games en route to a 3-6 record thus far. In his swan song last weekend, Hawkins lost in painful fashion to the Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence. Kansas rattled-off 35 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to stun the Buffaloes, 52-45.
