Tuesday afternoon, at 3:30pm ET, the winners of the 2010 American League Rawlings Gold Glove Awards will be announced. Though controversial and often a target for scorn, the Gold Gloves are nevertheless considered a high honor by the players, who appreciate the recognition for their efforts.
2010 AL Gold Glove Winners Announced At 3:30 PM ET
The Gold Gloves are voted on by the league’s managers and coaches, and votes are cast for the best defensive players at each infield position, and for the three best defensive outfielders, regardless of position. They may only vote for players in their own league, and they can’t vote for players on their own teams.
There are two long streaks on the line - both Ichiro Suzuki and Torii Hunter have won Gold Glove Awards nine years in a row, the longest streaks in baseball. Only Roberto Clemente, Al Kaline, Ken Griffey Jr., Andruw Jones, and Willie Mays have ever won more often in the outfield.
Looking to repeat will be last year's surprise winner, Derek Jeter, who was the oldest shortstop to win a Gold Glove since Luis Aparicio in 1970.
One winner may have already been revealed. It’s reported that Mark Buehrle’s wife posted a congratulatory message to her husband on Facebook on Monday. Buehrle won the pitching Gold Glove in 2009, the first such honor of his career.
