Recently, the Cincinnati Reds have been talking about working out a contract extension for NL MVP Joey Votto. Before working anything out with their first baseman, though, they've managed to lock up another one of their blossoming young players, signing outfielder Jay Bruce to a six-year deal.
Jay Bruce, Reds Agree To Six-Year Contract Extension
Bruce, 23, was previously preparing for salary arbitration, and had four remaining years of team control. The Reds have signed him through his first two years of free agency by drawing up the six-year, $51 million contract, and the deal also comes with a seventh year club option that could bring the total value to $63 million. Bruce receives a partial no-trade clause and some awards-based incentives as well.
Over 357 games with the Reds spanning three seasons, Bruce has slugged 68 home runs while posting an .800 OPS. At such a young age, he is considered to be one of the game’s most promising power hitters, and should now supply pop from the middle of the Cincinnati order through much of the prime of his career.
