On Saturday, the Kansas City Chiefs kept their top offensive weapon on the field for the long term, as running back Jamaal Charles agreed to a five-year, $32.5 million contract extension. ESPN's Adam Schefter first broke the news.
Jamaal Charles, Chiefs Agree To Five-Year Contract Extension
In 2010, the Chiefs rank No. 1 in the NFL in rushing yards, in large part due to Charles. He's rushed for 1,137 yards for an average of 6.2 per carry while sharing the load with fellow running back Thomas Jones. Last season, Charles rushed for 1,120 yards to average 5.9 yards per carry.
Charles has also emerged as a member of the Chiefs' improved receiving corps that includes Dwayne Bowe, Tony Moeaki, and Dexter McCluster. Through 12 games, he's put up 379 receiving yards.
After being drafted in the third round of the 2008 draft, Charles immediately began paying dividends for the Chiefs. He doesn’t turn 24 until December 27th, so this deal will keep Charles in Kansas City until he’s 29. This is a fantastic move for the team, and our Chiefs blog, Arrowhead Pride, agrees. They’ve set up a poll asking readers what they think of this extension, and unsurprisingly, the results are lopsided -- as of this writing, 290 approve, and two disapprove.
