The Oakland A's have had an up-and-down offseason. While they've been able to swing moves like the David DeJesus trade and the Rajai Davis deal, they've also failed in their pursuit of both Hisashi Iwakuma and Adrian Beltre. On Monday, though, word's out that they're about to make another upgrade, as the A's are close to signing free agent Hideki Matsui.
Hideki Matsui On Verge Of Signing With Oakland A’s
The A's have long been in pursuit of Matsui, and according to Susan Slusser, they're near an agreement on a one-year contract. There could be a press conference as early as Tuesday. It's unknown how much Matsui will make, but he earned $6 million a year ago with the Angels, and should make that much or a little more.
Matsui will replace the departed Jack Cust as Oakland's designated hitter. The 36-year-old batted .274 last season with 21 home runs and an .820 OPS, and while he isn't the threat he was in his younger days, he should be able to help out a lineup that struggled badly to score runs on a consistent basis.
