Hideki Matsui, Oakland A’s Agree On One-Year Contract

What once was close now is official - the Oakland A’s have signed Hideki Matsui to a one-year contract.

According to Buster Olney, the deal is worth $4.25 million, which is notable given that Matsui made $6 million a year ago with the Angels, and more than double that in previous years with the Yankees. It makes this out to be a pretty nice deal for Oakland, given that Matsui’s numbers last year were strong in a pitcher-friendly ballpark.

Susan Slusser says that an introductory press conference is expected around 3pm PT. There the A’s will welcome their new designated hitter, who will be replacing the departed Jack Cust. Oakland’s team leader in home runs last season was Kevin Kouzmanoff, who had 16, and the A’s will look to Matsui to provide some much-needed power.

Matsui batted .274 with the Angels, with a .361 OBP, a .459 slugging percentage, and 21 home runs.
