We'll get a 2011 Pro Bowl voting update tomorrow, which will still list Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick as the league's highest vote-getter. Close behind Vick last week were Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning (691,146) and New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (623,074). Those are names we're used to seeing after a dominant decade by each, but they're a little jarring this time around.
2011 Pro Bowl Voting: Can Tom Brady Overtake Peyton Manning?
The question isn’t whether Manning should be ranked ahead of Brady, whose 2010 season might end up featuring the NFL’s second-best-ever interception percentage, the AFC’s second-best yards-per-attempt, and the NFL’s second-best completion percentage. It’s whether Manning should make the Pro Bowl at all.
San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (502,382 votes last week) and Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (?) have thrown for more yards per attempt, while getting picked off far fewer times, than Manning has. Quarterback rating is an imperfect stat, but Brady, Rivers, and Cassel all rank in the top five; Manning ranks No. 11.
Manning has a lot of yards, which is the first and only stat most voters are going to look for. That happens when you throw every play, which in turn happens when you’re in charge of calling every play.
Last week's other leaders included Vikings RB Adrian Peterson, Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, Saints QB Drew Brees, Texans RB Arian Foster, Chargers TE Antonio Gates, and Titans RB Chris Johnson. No defensive players or linemen made the top ten, to your great shock.
