Throughout their time as a MLS franchise, Dallas has been largely know for two things: Poor attendance and an unwillingness to really open their wallets. Sure, they briefly signed a Designated Player, but Denilson was only around for less than a complete season and was reportedly paid a prorated $870,000.
It’s Time For FC Dallas To Open Their Wallets And Pay David Ferreira
With David Ferreira flirting with a team in his native Colombia, it's time for FC Dallas ownership to show they're serious. If Ferreira, the reigning league MVP, were to leave, it would be nothing short of a disaster.
FC Dallas is coming off their first ever MLS Cup finals appearance and there’s some reason to believe fans may be primed to start paying attention. Nothing could halt that momentum faster than allowing their best player to leave without any significant compensation.
The most recent news, luckily, suggests Ferreira is close to signing an extension, which would almost certainly make him the team’s second ever Designated Player.Ferreira’s first choice appears to be to remain in Dallas, where his been on loan from Atletico Paranaense since 2009.
The ball is clearly in FC Dallas’ court. If Hunts Sports Group is serious about wanting to be a part of MLS as the league moves forward, purchasing Ferreira’s contract and showing him serious money would be a good sign. If they are unwilling to spend real money, they really need to get out of the way and allow a different ownership group to make a serious attempt at making Dallas a successful market.
