Great 88: Connecticut Women’s Basketball Ties NCAA Record For Consecutive Wins, Dominates Ohio State

UConn’s women’s basketball program is now tied with the most legendary program in college sports. And the Huskies aren’t done yet.

UConn matched the NCAA record for consecutive wins held by John Wooden’s UCLA squads with their 88th consecutive victory on Sunday, beating Ohio State 81-50 at Madison Square Garden.

Tiffany Hayes led all scorers with 26 points, and added six rebounds, four assists, four steals, and two blocks. Hayes also helped UConn’s defense swarm the Buckeyes and stymie dominant low-post scorer Jantel Lavender, who had just 14 points to lead Ohio State.

Maya Moore added 22 points for UConn.

The next task for Geno Auriemma’s fantastic team will be an attempt to break the Bruins’ record. They’ll get that chance at home against Florida State on Tuesday.

Andrew Porter of our The UConn Blog provided live updates of the record-tying game, and tried to put the UConn streak in perspective.

All I’ll say is this: 88 is a special number in college basketball and no matter how the UConn’s streak stacks up against UCLA in your mind, it is a mammoth achievement, one that I personally didn’t think was possible after seeing a previous UConn win steak snapped at 70.Now, the Huskies will have a chance to claim sole ownership of the NCAA record for consecutive wins.
