The Chiefs and the 2011 NFL Draft

Joel Thorman of Arrowhead Pride and SB Nation has a nice overview of what positions the Chiefs may be looking in the 2011 NFL Draft.

He expounds on them, but he lists cornerback, wide receiver, nose tackle, running back, linebacker and offensive line in general.

The Chiefs are having an excellent season, but seem to especially need a young nose tackle early in the draft. However, that may not hold a first round value this year. Given that, and the number of excellent wide receiver prospects, that’s the way I’d lean for Kansas City when I do another mock.

Dwayne Bowe is having a very good year with 61 catches for 941 yards and 14 touchdowns. More importantly, he's dropping less passes. But Kansas City's success could depend on how consistent Bowe is this season and next, his last before becoming a free agent.

If the Chiefs used a first-round pick on a wide receiver, Michael Floyd (Notre Dame), Jonathan Baldwin (Pittsburgh) or Torrey Smith (Maryland) may be available.

The Chiefs may also have to consider someone in the deep crop of cornerbacks this year with starters Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr rapidly approaching free agency. Because Flowers and Carr have become one of the league's top corner duos, it allows the rest of Romeo Crennel's defense to get up field.

For the Chiefs, a cornerback with great developmental upside could be found in the fourth or fifth round. That’s man cover cornerbacks like Jalil Brown (Colorado), Curtis Marsh (Utah State) or Chris L. Rucker (Michigan State) could land.

The Chiefs have their full stock of draft picks and a conditional selection received from New England for safety Jarrad Page. Considering that Page has missed six games for the Patriots, it’s unlikely the pick would be any higher than a fifth-round selection.

Thorman also has a roundup of players from the greater Missouri area from my latest top 200.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.

It’s a high-potential pick for a Detroit defense that needs a solid pass rusher.
