Put the speculation to rest, David Ferreira is staying in FC Dallas. The reigning MLS MVP has re-signed a multi-year contract, presumably with a significant raise.
FC Dallas Does The Right/Obvious Thing, Re-Signs David Ferreira
“I’ve always said that I felt great with this team. I felt like I was at home,” said Ferreira to the FC Dallas website. “The support of the coaching staff was very important in the confidence it gave me when I was on the field. That’s why I wanted to remain with the team. The team helped me to get all the merits I achieved in 2010.”
If there’s any justice in the MLS world, we’ll eventually discover this was a Designated Player-level deal. Oddly, that was not part of the announcement, though. Considering the MLS Players Union reported Ferreira’s salary at $300,000 last year, a DP contract wouldn’t even require that big of a raise.
The details of the deal withstanding, this is a huge step in the right direction for the Toros. As I said earlier this month, FC Dallas has made too many positive moves in the last couple of years to allow Ferreira to leave.
Not only was Ferreira, hands down, the best player in MLS last season, he was also one of the more enjoyable players to watch. His ability to find open space, create for teammates and finish his own opportunities is the kind of stuff this league is too often lacking.
