Rumor has it that Santa Claus just might be visiting NASCAR Ranting and Raving before tomorrow night’s journey. It would be downright inappropriate if we didn’t to give him our wish list by time he shows up. In that regard, I’ve prepared a NASCAR-themed Christmas wish list for jolly St. Nick.
As unlikely to happen as most of this wish list is, remember that Santa Claus will believe in you if you believe in him. So without further ado, I present to you my NASCAR-based Christmas wish list:

- No more changes to the Chase for the Sprint Cup. It almost seems like alterations occur on a bi-annual basis. Consistency is just as important as on-track results and NASCAR is coming dangerously close to the Chase being seen as the most gimmicked playoff presentation in sports history.
- We need more road courses. NASCAR drivers claim to be the best in the world at what they do. So prove it and do so on road, street, and even dirt courses.
- Less is absolutely more in NASCAR and I’d like shorter races. It’s not that I’m less of a fan but the longer Sprint Cup events seem to fall in lulls in races 500 miles or longer. Traditional races like Daytona and Charlotte are okay but cut down on the length of some of the more routine superspeedway races.
- And speaking of the superspeedways, I’d like to see less of them as well. Is there anything architecturally special or unique about Fontana, Michigan or Atlanta? Fans don’t seem to call them cookie-cutters out of affection.
- NASCAR is tradition-rich at facilities like Darlington, Richmond, Bristol, Rockingham and North Wilksboro. Make use of that history across all three of the touring series when possible. NASCAR is becoming guilty of forgetting their past in lieu of their future and that’s not entirely a good thing.
- Where have our heroes gone? While villains and quasi-villains like Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson reign supreme, heroes like Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart have become downright irrelevant and in worst cases - winless. Johnson meteoric rise is only magnified when placed next to Gordon, Earnhardt and Smoke’s struggles. A strong 2011 by these three can only help the sport moving forward.
This is but a small list and Santa carries a rather large bag. So I fully expect you guys to help me out. What NASCAR related things do you want for Christmas?
Lastly and most importantly, I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas to you and yours from the staff of NASCAR Ranting and Raving! Be safe and have a wonderful holiday season.
