Dwayne De Rosario is already in Scotland, training with Celtic alongside Freddie Ljungberg. Despite being under contract with Toronto FC, he is doing so without Toronto FC knowing about it.
Dwayne De Rosario Training With Celtic Without Toronto FC’s Permission
“We were unaware of Dwayne’s plan to train with Celtic and we will contact them to understand the situation,” TFC interim general manager Earl Cochrane said in the statement. “Obviously, if there is interest in a short-term loan arrangement by either him or Celtic, they will need to approach us and the league formally, and we will consider based on what is in TFC’s best interest.”
Prior to that statement, MLSsoccer.com had quoted Cochrane on Monday saying “Dwayne is not going on trial with Celtic or any other club.”
De Rosario has been at odds with TFC management during the past year. He has openly been seeking a raise, even pantomiming the signing of a check during a goal celebration last year. He made nearly $450,000 last year, according to numbers released by the MLS Players Union, but was apparently displeased that two other players on the team made significantly more than him despite making a run at the MVP.
TFC is currently without a clear power structure, which may be contributing to the situation. Jurgen Klinsman, who was hired as an adviser to oversee the remaking of the organization after Mo Johnston was ousted as the general manager, does not seem to be overseeing the day-to-day operations. While Cochrane may be in charge, De Rosario apparently felt it unnecessary to get clearance.
