MLS Drops Fourth Round Of SuperDraft, Adds Third Round To Supplemental

The ever-changing world of talent allocation in MLS has taken another turn. Just a few weeks before the league’s SuperDraft, we have learned that the fourth round has been eliminated and a third round has been added to the Supplemental Draft.

The relative significance of that change, however, doesn’t appear to be that great. Essentially, the league has moved the the final round of the Jan. 13 SuperDraft five days back and will pick those players via conference call, rather than while gathered in Baltimore.

These changes appear to have been discussed at the MLS Cup, but have been finalized in recent days, according to a league email. The league has yet to formally announce any of this.

In years past, the Supplemental Draft has been used to select players that have gone unselected in the SuperDraft. All this seems to change, then, is the date of the final round. As such, teams that acquired fourth-round SuperDraft picks will simply be given picks in the first round of the Supplemental Draft.

Also of note, the SuperDraft will also include players who have not attended college. One of those players is John Rooney, the brother of Wayne Rooney, who signed a contract with MLS. This would seem to have more longterm effects, but little light has been shed on this particular issue.
