Birmingham City faces an investigation into the chaotic scenes following their Carling Cup tie with Aston Villa on Wednesday. The Birmingham fans invade the pitch after their 2-1 win over their cross-town rivals, apparently forgetting that most supporters save that invasion for after they reach the final. Had the celebrations stopped there, the club would likely not be facing a six-figure fine. Instead, the behavior of a few fans disintegrated, with the home support launching a flare into the visitors end, and the Villa support responding by ripping out seats and throwing them on to the pitch.
Birmingham City Face FA Investigation Into Violence After Their Carling Cup Win Over Aston Villa
Fourteen people were taken to the hospital for minor injuries, including four police officers, while two police dogs were injured by projectiles. Birmingham will now have to prove to the FA that they did everything possible to prevent the violence, but it seems almost inevitable that they will be sanctioned. Villa, too, could be charged for the behavior of their away support.
Before Wednesday night, Aston Villa and Birmingham had not played an evening match in over thirty years. Unfortunately, the behavior of these fans is an indication why.
