After the gun discharged, killing his friend, Van Exel allegedly dumped the body in a nearby lake, apparently panicked by the situation.
Paul Johnson, the younger Van Exel’s attorney, told The Associated Press that Van Exel and Eyo were allegedly playing with a shotgun at a home in Garland, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, when the gun accidentally fired. Johnson further explained that Van Exel “panicked” and moved the body, dumping it less than a mile away in nearby Lake Ray Hubbard.
Van Exel reportedly told police he was responsible for Eyo’s death, but maintained it was accidental.
His father, Nick, is currently an assistant for the Atlanta Hawks. Van Exel retired as a player in 2006 after a 13-year career in the league.
