Eager to upgrade an outfield that already features Colby Rasmus and Matt Holliday, the St. Louis Cardinals have gone out and made a splash by signing Lance Berkman to a one-year contract.
Lance Berkman Signs Contract With Cardinals For $8 Million, One Year
The contract will be worth $8 million, and Berkman will play left field, with Holliday sliding over to right. Berkman hasn’t been a regular in the outfield since 2004, and he is not known for his range or his glove, but the Cardinals got him in an effort to boost their offensive productivity.
The 34-year-old Berkman batted just .248 a year ago with the Astros and Yankees, slugging a career-low 14 home runs. However, he posted a .907 OPS the season before, and with his blend of patience and power, he seems like a solid bounce-back candidate. He'll join a lineup that already features Rasmus, Holliday, and Albert Pujols.
The Oakland A’s were known to have strong interest in Berkman before he signed with St. Louis. For more, check out Viva El Birdos.
