Don Meredith Dies: Former Dallas Cowboys QB And Monday Night Football Host Was 72

It's almost fitting that Don Meredith passes away on the day of the biggest Monday Night Football game of the year. The former Dallas Cowboys host was a 12-year mainstay as one of the original commentators on Monday Night Football. Meredith's wife confirmed to the Associated Press that he passed away suffering a brain hemorrhage and entering into a coma.

“He was the best there was,” she said, describing him as kind, warm and funny. “We lost a good one.”

Meredith was with the Cowboys in the 60s and, while he never lead them to a Super Bowl, did become one of the best Cowboys quarterbacks in their storied history with 17,199 passing yards and 111 touchdowns before retiring unexpectedly before the 1969 season.

From there he moved to the role so many people became accustomed to seeing him in as a Monday Night Football host with Keith Jackson and Howard Cosell.

Meredith’s trademark was singing a famous Willie Nelson song, “Turn Out The Lights”, when a game was all but over.
