Mark Reynolds Trade To Orioles Nearing Completion

The 2010 MLB Winter Meetings got underway in earnest Monday morning, and from the looks of things, we're about to see our first trade. The Diamondbacks and Orioles are reportedly closing in on a deal that will send Mark Reynolds to Baltimore in exchange for two young pitchers.

The Orioles have been in the market for a third baseman and the Diamondbacks have been looking to move Reynolds, which makes this a good match. Reynolds is 27 years old and under contract through 2013, but has developed a reputation for whiffing on account of his prodigious strikeout totals. Reynolds has led the league in strikeouts for three consecutive seasons, with 638 since the beginning of 2008. His redeeming skill is his power, as he’s blasted 104 home runs over the same span of time. The Orioles will hope that his offense is able to make the transition over from a hitter-friendly Arizona ballpark.

Headed the other way will be David Hernandez and Kam Mickolio. Hernandez is a 25-year-old righty with experience starting and relieving. He works primarily off of a mid-90s fastball and a sharp curve. Mickolio, meanwhile, is a 26-year-old righty reliever armed with a mid- to high-90s heater. He's posted excellent strikeout rates in the minors with inconsistent command, and is a high-risk/high-reward sort of reliever with closer potential.

It's a deal that fills a hole for the Orioles, and leaves Adrian Beltre staring at the Angels, waiting on an offer. Read more at Camden Chat and AZ Snakepit.
