The Pittsburgh Pirates have been on the hunt for some starting pitching so far this offseason, and while they appear to be out of the mix for high-upside free agent Brandon Webb, they have managed to nab one guy with some promise.
Scott Olsen To Sign With Pirates On One-Year Contract
According to Jenifer Langosch, the Pirates have reached an agreement with free agent starter Scott Olsen on a one-year contract with heavy incentives. The deal is pending a physical exam, scheduled for later this week, and Olsen has struggled with shoulder injuries over the last two seasons, but he should still be able to pass.
Olsen turns 27 in January, and is a left-handed starting pitcher with 723 innings of big league experience. Once considered a top prospect, he's lost a lot of his sheen, and posted a 5.76 ERA over parts of two seasons with the Nationals between 2009-2010. The Pirates are hoping he can re-discover some of what he had when he was more successful with the Marlins earlier in his career.
