The Pittsburgh Pirates came to the MLB Winter Meetings looking to add some starting pitching. They dropped out of the bidding for Brandon Webb, but scooped up Scott Olsen early on Monday, and late into the night, they also inked Kevin Correia.
Kevin Correia Signs With Pirates On Two-Year Contract
Jerry Crasnick reports that the Pirates and Correia have agreed on a two-year contract worth $8 million. The 30-year-old Correia is in line to make more than he's ever made, having earned $3.6 million with the Padres in 2010.
Correia is a righty starter with a broad array of pitches, getting by with guile more than power. He was inconsistent over 26 starts with the Padres a year ago, but is only a season removed from succeeding over 200 innings with the Giants in 2009, and the Pirates are hoping he's able to get back to that looking forward. While he won't be a top-of-the-rotation starter, he's capable of being a decent innings sponge in the middle.
