Dave Wannstedt Fired By Pitt, Frank Cignetti Named Interim Head Coach

The Pittsburgh Panthers have announced the resignation of football coach Dave Wannstedt after a 7-5 regular season that saw Pitt fall from a No. 15 preseason ranking to the BBVA Compass Bowl. ESPN's Brian Bennett reports he'll remain in the athletic department, though he won't be doing any coaching.

Wannstedt coached the Panthers for six years, going 42-31 with a 1-1 bowl record, one ranked finish, and no outright Big East titles. Inconsistency on the field, complemented by a steady streak of player arrests, contributed to Wannstedt's increasingly shaky recent standing.

According to Brett McMurphy, offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti will take over as interim head coach, guiding the team to its bowl game against the Kentucky Wildcats. Cignetti joined Pitt in 2009, having worked as the offensive coordinator for the California Golden Bears, North Carolina Tar Heels, and Fresno St. Bulldogs and as the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach.

Cignetti has never served as a head coach at any level.
