Real Madrid goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek is expected to miss six weeks after fracturing his mandible in a match against Auxerre. (A fractured mandible is a broken jaw, for those not familiar with the medical wording, and isn’t the kind of thing you want to be playing soccer with.) The 37-year-old Polish player, and second-stringer, had to leave the match after what the team’s official website deemed “a hard knock to the face.”
Jerzy Dudek Injury: Real Madrid Goalkeeper Out With Fractured Mandible
Dudek, who’s been used sparingly so far this season, had two saves in the match before he was forced to leave. Antonio Adan was substituted for Dudek in the match, which Real Madrid won 4-0. Dudek, meanwhile, went to Sanitas La Moraleja Hospital and underwent tests that showed the broken jaw. Starting keeper Iker Casillas was rested for the match, in part because Madrid had already clinched a top spot.
The club says Dudek is expected to see a maxillofacial surgeon in the next 24 hours.
