Detroit Lions rookie DT Ndamukong Suh has been fined $15,000 by the NFL for shoving Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler on Sunday. Suh was flagged for unnecessary roughness, and what referee Ed Hochuli referred to as a "non-football act," after appearing to club Cutler to the ground as the quarterback scrambled towards the first down marker. The penalty set up Chicago's game-winning touchdown.

Suh plans to appeal. Hochuli has defended the call, seeming to imply that Cutler was already going to the ground anyway. Bears GM Jerry Angelo appeared to think Suh should've been ejected. Lions WR Calvin Johnson disagreed with the penalty, saying, "I guess when you see it real fast, it might have looked like an elbow. But if you see it on replay, that tells you."
It’s not clear what the preferred technique in that situation. If Suh had gone for a wrap-up, Cutler could have secured a first down by the time he hit the ground. The rookie brought the runner to the ground with maximum swiftness.
