The Philadelphia Phillies have so far put together a fairly quiet offseason, with the biggest move being the loss of star outfielder Jayson Werth to the division rival Nationals. However, on Wednesday, they put the finishing touches on a move to help shore up their bullpen.
Dennys Reyes, Phillies Agree To One-Year Contract
The Phillies have signed veteran lefty reliever Dennys Reyes to a one-year contract. Reyes will make $1.1 million in 2011, and the contract has a $1.35 million club option for 2012. The option becomes mutual if Reyes pitches in 70 games. He'll therefore take a pay cut from the $2 million he made in 2010, but it's still a good amount of money for a player of his type.
The 33-year-old Reyes is an established 14-year Major League veteran, and he's made his living as a lefty specialist out of the bullpen. Over his career, he's held lefty hitters to a .238 average and a .669 OPS, and while he struggled against lefties last season, he was excellent the year before, and should make for a good replacement for the departed J.C. Romero.
