The Baltimore Orioles have had a bit of a frustrating offseason. While they were able to pull off a trade for Mark Reynolds, by and large they've been ignored by every high-profile free agent they've talked to. But according to Jeff Zrebiec, they've at least been able to re-sign one free agent of their own.
Koji Uehara Re-Signs With Orioles On One-Year Contract
Zrebiec says that the Orioles have re-signed reliever Koji Uehara to a one-year contract. Financial terms of the contract aren't yet known, but it's believed to include a vesting option for 2012, presumably based on playing time or games finished. The contract may also have some incentive clauses.
Though he battled through a few injuries last season, the 35-year-old Uehara was by far Baltimore’s most effective reliever in 2010, and as a free agent, he generated interest from a number of teams over the past few weeks. In 44 innings, he struck out 55 batters while walking just five, and he also saved 13 games. It’s assumed that the Orioles will look for him to serve as their closer again in 2011.
