The Kansas City Royals already made one addition to their outfield on Wednesday by signing Jeff Francoeur to a one-year contract. However, they weren't done raiding the ex-Braves cupboard, and late Wednesday night - or early Thursday morning, depending on your preference - they picked up Melky Cabrera as well.
Melky Cabrera Signs One-Year Contract With Royals
Enrique Rojas reports that Cabrera and the Royals have agreed to a one-year contract worth $1.25 million. The contract also has $0.25 million in incentives, and is only pending a physical.
It’s unclear what role, exactly, Cabrera will fill in the Kansas City outfield, as the team currently has a lot of bodies floating around. The 26-year-old is a switch-hitter capable of playing all three defensive positions. While he batted just .255 a year ago, he batted .274 the year before in New York with 13 home runs, showing promise that he could develop into a legitimate everyday player.
