It took several weeks and at least half a dozen candidates to say no thanks, but the Chicago Bears have finally hired an offensive coordinator.
Finally, Chicago Bears Hire Mike Martz As Offensive Coordinator
The Bears have tabbed former St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz to lead the offense, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
The Bears coordinator search has been a strange one to say the least. Every few days it seemed there were reports that they were closing in on a target, only to have said target say, ‘Thanks but no thanks.’
Then, the Bears contacted Martz in what a lot of folks described as a desperate attempt to fill the position. Martz even reportedly flew to Nashville to meet with Jay Cutler on Lovie Smith’s dime.
Recently, Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post made the case for the Bears to hire Martz. Lombardi, a former NFL executive, is sure that the move will create positive results for Cutler, who had been in on the interview process for the coordinators.
Now, how long will it be until Martz makes a play for Lovie’s job? I say that’s at least a month away.
