The Winter Olympics are the perfect opportunity to learn about other countries, and what sports they particularly enjoy. For example, the Netherlands treat speed skating like we treat football, and Canada takes curling so seriously that they elect the guys who make the ice into the Curling Hall of Fame (really). And then there’s Austria, who loves skiing more than you love anything.
Austrians Like Skiing More Than You Like Anything
↵This is video of Men’s Slalom in Schladming, Austria, a stop on the FIS World Cup Alpine Skiing tour. It’s a dark, cold night. It’s snowing, causing near whiteout conditions. And there are over 50,000 Austrians lining the side of the mountain, waving flags, blowing horns, lighting flares and screaming for their countryman Reinfried Herbt as he carves his way to a win (starting at the 2:20 mark).
