Market For Johnny Damon Taking Shape

Free agent Johnny Damon, still unsigned despite a highly successful 2009, is getting a better idea of where he could end up. According to Jon Paul Morosi:

Even with pitchers and catchers set to report next week, free agent outfielder Johnny Damon hasn’t moved off his demand of a two-year deal, several major league sources said Tuesday.

A number of people in the industry have said in recent days that they expect Damon to sign with the Tigers, Braves or Rays. But if his asking price drops, other teams could enter the market.

Later, on Twitter, Morosi added:

Tigers could use another infielder but are devoted to the pursuit of Damon, first and foremost, a source says.

The Braves may have made a one-year offer with some deferred salary, but with little to spend and both Jason Heyward and Jordan Schafer on the way, it's unlikely they'll make a strong push. And though the Rays could use Damon as an everyday DH, they don't have a lot to spend, either. Which seems to leave the Tigers, who would presumably add Damon at the expense of Ryan Raburn's playing time. At this point, though, it's a lot of guesswork. The only thing that's clear is that very few teams have interest in adding Johnny Damon at any kind of moderate salary, with these three being the clear favorites.
