Already having extended to Johnny Damon the biggest one-year contract, the Detroit Tigers may have now doubled their offer:
Mike Ilitch Okays Damon Offer Worth $14m
Tigers owner Mike Ilitch has authorized a two-year, $14 million offer to free-agent outfielder Johnny Damon, according to major-league sources.
If offered, a $14m/2yr deal instantly becomes far and away the best offer Damon has received since the beginning of the offseason, and seems to indicate that an agreement between Damon and Detroit isn’t far away. Says the same article:
One player agent who is not involved in the talks predicted Thursday that Damon would sign with the first team that offers him a two-year deal.
Given that the Braves have prospects Jason Heyward and Jordan Schafer knocking on the door, it isn’t likely that they’ll try to keep up. It appears that it’s only a matter of time before Damon officially returns to the AL Central.
