SB Nation’s Capitals blog, Japers’ Rink, thinks Washington may have been due for a let-down:
Japers’ Rink Breaks Down Capitals Second Straight 6-5 Loss
It just doesn't get much harder than this. Heading into the second half of back-to-back games while being on the road is tough; it gets tougher when dealing with dual letdowns of having an historic winning streak snapped last night, in overtime, after yet again clawing their way back into a game. It's an explanation for why the Capitals came out as flat as they did - but certainly not an excuse. Not even close. So the Caps pick up their second straight loss after appearing to be invincible for over a month, and they do so with an identical 6-5 final score - only this time there's no last minute magic, no overtime, no consolation point. Once again there's offense (including yet another hat trick) but no defense, and large chunks of time in which they simply did not show up. The loss tonight marks the first time the Caps have failed to pick up a point since early January, and they were overdue for a game like that.
On the plus side, Alexander Semin had a sweet hat trick and the Capitals still hold a comfortable 14-point lead for the best record in the Eastern Conference.
