Chris Pronger was going to be hauled off to the penalty box on a penalty, but apparently the Swiss didn’t really want to wait.
Switzerland Shocks Canada, Ties Game 2-2 Late In Third
As they controlled the play in the Canadian zone with an extra skater, an errant pass got away from Patrick von Gunten. He was able to catch up with it along the near side boards, however, and with time running off the third period clock, he just threw the disc into traffic in front of Martin Brodeur. Patrick Marleau, who’s been the hero in this game so far for Canada with two points, was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. The puck bounced off of his leg and into the net, stunning the crowd at BC Hockey Place.
Ironically, since this is the Olympics and every team is treated like the home team, the Canadian crowd was forced to watch the Swiss players celebrate while listening to “Ole! Ole!” blare over the loud speaker. Irony.
You can bet the visiting team doesn’t care, though, and confidence is brewing in that locker room. If Jonas Hiller can hold up and these guys can take advantage of their opportunities, who knows what could happen in the third period.
