White Sox Back Out Of Damon Negotiations

A confusing and drawn-out negotiations process continues to evolve, as today the White Sox have withdrawn their offer to Johnny Damon:

The Chicago White Sox have pulled their offer to free-agent outfielder Johnny Damon off the table.
...
The White Sox made a $6 million offer for Damon, according to major league sources.

GM Kenny Williams hints at the possibility that his team could re-enter the fray later on, but for the time being, the White Sox are out of it. Says Buster Olney:

Heard this: Scott Boras is now working a two-pronged approach on the Tigers. No. 1 -- he'd like to get Detroit to remove all deferred money out of their one-year, $7 million offer. Or No. 2, he'd wants Ilitch to actually give Damon legitimate second year in their offer. During this process, DET's one-year offer to Damon has included some deferred money, which obviously takes down the present-day value.

It would appear that the two-year contract rumored to have been offered by Detroit hasn’t been offered after all - only discussed. And so Damon remains unsigned, with one strong suitor reluctant to give what Damon and Boras want. Conclusion? Detroit’s the heavy favorite. But if and when they get Damon to put pen to paper, neither side is likely to be thrilled with how everything went.
