Vanderbilt Coach Bobby Johnson Talks About The Murder of Recruit Rajaan Bennett

It’s never easy to write the news of someone’s death, let alone the murder of an 18-year old athlete, so let’s keep this one brief before the post turns into a commentary about the frailty of life, even when blessed with a body that makes you feel indestructible.SN had the story yesterday of Vanderbilt recruit Rajaan Bennett who was shot to death by his mother’s ex-boyfriend in a murder-suicide.

⇥⇥Officers heard gunshots as they arrived at the home where Rajaan Bennett, 18, lived with his mother, Powder Springs Lt. Matt Boyd said. Inside they found Bennett, a running back at McEachern High School, dead of a gunshot wound.⇥⇥⇥⇥Boyd said Clifton Steger, 39, of Milledgeville shot Bennett and then killed himself. Bennett’s uncle, Taiwan Hunter, 32, was wounded and underwent surgery. He was in critical condition Thursday afternoon.⇥⇥

Late yesterday afternoon, Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson spoke with media about the news. (Video courtesy VUcommodores.com):

⇥⇥“One huge thing, this is a guy who was very accomplished. He was one of the best tailbacks in the state of Georgia. I think he was 5A Player-of-the-Year, a four-star recruit. But he had no ego. He was just a great kid. He did a good job in school. He was just what you wanted. At the same time, he was always concerned about his family. He had the statistics…the props, or whatever you want to call it…to have an ego. He could have done it. He was just the opposite.”↵
