Switzerland’s Carlo Janka Wins Men’s Giant Slalom Gold, Bode Fails To Finish

Switzerland’s Carlo Janka, the leader after the day’s first run, won gold in Men’s Giant Slalom on Tuesday, posting a combined time of 2:37.83.

Bode Miller -- who nearly crashed during the top half -- skied off the course in the first run, eliminating him from contention (an athlete must successfully complete both slalom runs to qualify). Miller, who has already won three medals in Vancouver, will look to become the first ever alpine skier to win four medals in one Olympic Games on Saturday, in the Slalom.

Janka, the 2009 World Champion in the event, was leading by 0.60 seconds after the first run and hung on for the gold, despite skiing more than three seconds slower on the second run. He edged out silver medalist Kjetil Jansrud of Norway by 0.39 seconds. Fellow Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal won bronze, his third medal of the Games.

If that medal podium looks different, it’s because it does not include a skier from the United States -- the Men’s Giant Slalom is the first race at the 2010 Olympics without an American medal winner.

Ted Ligety, a pre-race favorite, was the highest-finishing American, coming in ninth.
