Holland’s Sven Kramer skated the fastest time in the Men’s Speed Skating 10,000m Tuesday afternoon, blowing everyone else away by a full four seconds. And then he was disqualified.
Sven Kramer Disqualified In Men’s Speed Skating 10,000m, Lee Awarded Gold
Kramer, the world record holder and three-time world champion in the event, turned in the fastest time, but failed to switch lanes after the midway point of the race, and as a result, was disqualified.
The overwhelming favorite was noticeably distraught afterward, throwing down his glasses in disgust and then was seen screaming after his coach had informed him what happened, dramatically ending the post-race celebration for Kramer.
As a result, Lee Seung-hoon of South Korea was awarded the gold medal. Russia’s Ivan Skobrev took the silver and Dutchman Bob de Jong, the defending gold medalist, got the bronze.
Kramer was hoping for another gold medal to go along with his win in the 5,000m.
