Ski Cross Women’s Gold Goes To Canada’s Ashleigh McIvor

Canada entered the Vancouver Games having never won a gold medal when serving as the host country for the Olympics. After Tuesday, they now have six in the 2010 Winter Games alone.

Ashleigh McIvor won Canada’s latest gold medal on Tuesday in the women’s debut of Ski Cross. She was able to survive the run and cross the finish like before Norway’s Hedda Berntsen who finished second, and France’s Marion Josserand who won bronze.

The already difficult course was made even more dangerous by a snowstorm that moved in about halfway through the event.

Heavy, blowing snow slowed down the course and made the top two jumps, with their stair-step ledges, particularly difficult for the skiers. They had trouble gaining speed toward the bottom of the mountain, as well. The only race McIvor didn’t win was the semifinal, where she let Berntsen pass her at the end as the two crept toward the finish.

McIvor was able to avoid any serious trouble though, and in ski cross, the Winter Games’ newest sport, that normally means a gold medal.
