Kirk Maltby will undergo shoulder surgery next week which will end his year with the Detroit Red Wings. The veteran’s placement on long-term injured reserve solves salary-cap problems and allows defenseman Andreas Lilja’s activation. Maltby joins a long list of Red Wings who have been hurt at one point this season such as Johan Franzen, Niklas Kronwall, Jason Williams, Henrik Zetterberg and Valtteri Filppula.

↵Lilja is expected to dress on March 1st in Colorado, Detroit’s first game following the Olympics. Maltby had four goals and two assists in 52 games.
