Alabama Legalizes MMA
Sweet home alabama just passed mma!!! One more down 4 more to go!!!
The four states which are lagging behind here are New York, Connecticut, West Virginia and Vermont.
Seeing some regulation in Alabama is a very, very good thing given that it is the state that has brought us such fights as the amateur MMA debut of quadruple amputee Kyle Maynard, Tim Sylvia vs. Ray Mercer (after it couldn’t find any sanctioning) and the planned Alabama Pride event which was to be headlined by a boxing match involving DMX. The Alabama Pride event is famous for DMX’s camp looking to get it put in his contract that he would win the fight and when the promotion wouldn’t agree to fix the fight DMX pulled out and was replaced by Coolio. The event then never actually took place.
Oversight should, in theory, provide protection from any sort of awful mismatches and 100% freakshow booking. Still, if the commission is made up of people who don’t know what they’re doing it may not improve at all. Here’s hoping that this is more than just a move to attract big events and is going to be an actual effort to keep the sport clean and safe in Alabama.
