It hasn't exactly been a banner rookie season for No. 2 overall draft pick Hasheem Thabeet. Based on the way he's played this season, it's hard to believe the Grizzlies passed up Tyreke Evans, Stephen Curry, Ricky Rubio, Brandon Jennings and many others to pick Thabeet when they already had a blossoming young center in Marc Gasol.
No. 2 Draft Pick Hasheem Thabeet Assigned To D-League
Thabeet's season is about to get worse, though. SB Nation's NBA Developmental League blog Ridiculous Upside is reporting that Thabeet will be sent down to the Dakota Wizards, Memphis' D-League affiliate.
According to multiple sources close to the situation, the Memphis Grizzlies will assign second overall draft pick Hasheem Thabeet to the D-League's Dakota Wizards, along with rookie guard Lester Hudson, on Friday.
Thabeet will become the highest ever draft pick assigned to the D-League, a dubious record previous held by Martell Webster, who was assigned to the Fort Worth Flyers from the Portland Blazers as the sixth overall pick in 2006.
A D-League assignment can often be a good thing for a player’s development, so we shouldn’t completely write off Thabeet yet. Still, I’m pretty sure this isn’t what Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley had in mind when he insisted on selecting Thabeet in the draft.
