Dion Phaneuf won’t be missed too much in Calgary if Mark Giordano can keep his physical presence in the spotlight. Joni Pitkanen got a taste of Giordano’s power as he was checked into the boards and the force took him right into the Carolina Hurricanes bench. On his way down, Pitkanen’s leg bumped Jussi Jokinen and then slightly cut Eric Staal’s cheek.

↵Staal was receiving high-sticks constantly throughout the game and is figuring out what being a captain of a franchise is all about. Fortunately, no major damage was done from Pitkanen’s skate and it goes to show how alert a hockey player must be even on the bench.
