At yesterday’s UFC 109 press conference, UFC President Dana White confirmed what many people believed to be the case anyway; the winner of the card’s co-main event featuring Nate Marquardt and Chael Sonnen will indeed be awarded a shot at the middleweight title. MMA Mania has more on the announcement.
Nate Marquardt And Chael Sonnen To Fight For Title Shot At UFC 109
↵↵Even though the returning Vitor Belfort may have cut the line of hungry middleweight contenders, UFC President Dana White confirmed at the Feb. 4 pre-fight progress conference that the upcoming 185-pound scrap between Chael Sonnen and Nate Marquardt at UFC 109 will indeed determine the number one contender for the division title.
↵↵The news is not really much of a surprise. Marquardt has undoubtedly worked his way back up the ladder in the division and another shot at the belt, should he get by Sonnen this Saturday night, will surely be justified.
↵As for Sonnen, though he hasn’t beaten as many top guys as Marquardt has, if he is able to pull the upset, who’s to say that the title shot should not be his.
