There has been much excitement surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs and their new blockbuster acquisitions, Dion Phaneuf and Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Fans on talk radio -- which of course are not a barometer to gauge the intelligence of a fan base, but still hilarious nonetheless -- have actually been saying that the Leafs are going to win the Cup this season in the aftermath of Brian Burke's brilliant trades.
Devils, Kovalchuk Complete Frantic Comeback To Beat Leafs, 4-3
Yes, those same Leafs that currently sit in 14th of 15 teams in the Eastern Conference.
After they beat the New Jersey Devils at home earlier in the week, those irrational hopes grew, and through the first 55 or so minutes of tonight's contest against those same Devils, you could likely hear Leafs fans screaming with joy throughout Canada's largest city.
And then it all came crashing down.
In a matter of less than three minutes, the Devils went from being down 3-1 on home ice in the waning moments of the third period to up 4-3 as the final horn was ready to sound. The Devils' own exciting new acquisition, Ilya Kovalchuk, had an assist on the game-winning goal, a gorgeous deposit into the back of the net by Jay Pandolfo, to add to his assist on Dainius Zubrus' first period goal.
As the Leafs circled the ice stunned as the final seconds ticked off the clock, Devils fans at Prudential Center rained a “Hey, you suck!” chant down upon them. If you turn the dial to Toronto sports talk radio tonight, you’ll probably hear a lot of those same thoughts.
