After five days of long negotiations which were called "pending" and then "done" before restarted, the struggling Carolina Hurricanes have finally traded defenseman Niclas Wallin and a fifth round draft pick in 2010 to the San Jose Sharks for a second round pick in 2010.
Niclas Wallin Traded To San Jose Sharks
The pick heading to Carolina originally belonged to the Buffalo Sabres.
Wallin, 34, is known as a defensive defenseman who utilizes his size in playing the position. He comes with a salary cap hit of $1.725 million. He had a no-trade clause in his contract, which was reported to be one of the hold ups in the trade. He will be a free agent in July.
SB Nation’s Sharks blog, Fear The Fin, has more details on why it took so long to get the deal done.
Previous reports stated that trade talks stalled when [a contract] extension couldn’t be ironed out. That didn’t make any sense, since Wilson has a consistent rule of not talking contracts during the regular season.
That was the case, as it appears as if Wilson would not extend Wallin as part of this trade. Wallin wasn’t too keen on that, and with Wilson’s refusal on an extension, the trade never went through.
Apparently those problems were worked out, as obviously, Wallin has no waived that no-trade clause.
SBN’s Canes Country chimed in on the deal as well, saying that Wallin ‘was the ultimate team player and he will be missed.’
