College Hockey Game Goes To Five OTs, Almost Enters ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ Territory

Let’s compare in contrast. Friday night’s NCAA hockey game between Union College and Quinnipiac and the film Lawrence of Arabia are different because one takes place on ice and the other takes place in the desert. The two are similar in that they both took a really, really long time to watch.

↵From when the puck dropped to when the game ended, the UC-Quinnipiac game took five hours and fifty-six minutes -- an NCAA record. Puck Daddy notes:

↵↵The teams combined for 76 shots in overtime and 130 shots total. There were only 54 combined shots after regulation.

↵↵The players were evidently exhausted, which is certainly understandable given that they were playing one of the longest games in the history of one of the most exhausting sports ever devised. Well, except for chess. 1989’s Nikolić-Arsović match, which ended in a draw after 269 moves per side (an typical chess match should last around 40 moves per side) and took over 20 hours to complete. In long matches like that, players are known to suffer from exhaustion and require trips to the hospital. It’s no joke, y’all.

↵(By the way, it’s worth noting that Union College and Quinnipiac have to face off again tonight at 7.)
