Capitals Fans Asked to Quit The [Beep]ing Honking

With the best home record in the NHL this season, the Capitals have given hockey fans in D.C. plenty to celebrate. Which is good, as, aside from D.C. United titles, it’s been a good while since the town has had a successful sports story to call its own. Nevertheless, residents living around the downtown-located Verizon Center would like it if Caps fans could not lay on their car horns as they emptied out of the arena post-victory. ↵

↵↵

↵↵There have been enough noise complaints that signs are now posted asking fans to only use their horns when necessary as a courtesy to neighboring citizens who might like quiet in the late evening time. Somehow the Wizards aren’t getting the same treatment, though if the team were to pull off the occasional victory, perhaps it might be needed. Anyway, some Caps fans are naturally displeased that someone wants to crack down on their obnoxiousness.↵

↵↵⇥One woman asks, “How can they stop us from beeping, my God?”↵⇥↵⇥A man says he thinks the signs will cause a beeping backlash.↵⇥

↵⇥↵⇥“People are just going to keep doing it despite the sign now,” he says.↵⇥

↵⇥↵⇥Before you get too upset, Caps spokesman Nate Ewell tells WTOP you can still honk inside the garage.↵⇥

↵↵↵Well, that’s a weak way to go about enforcement. Once people get in celebratory honking mode, they aren’t going to stop just because they leave the garage. As any student of gridlock knows, honking only begets more honking, and tepid opposition will only serve to embolden the honkers. Before you know it, they will overrun the city with their cacophony. And just when the Caps were about to finally get Obama to come out to a game.↵
