Herb Pope Breaks Man Code Twice in NIT Game; Seton Hall’s Day Spirals Out of Control

Not that many people probably watched, but Texas Tech took down Seton Hall on Tuesday night in the first round of the NIT. (You can read the AP recap here.) But really the only thing anyone is talking about today is Herb Pope and the fact that he punched Texas Tech’s Darko Cohadarevic below the belt ... twice↵

↵Now, say what you will about coach Bobby Gonzalez, who seems to be almost universally disliked, but this? Yeah, this is not a good look for Pope, whose college career reads like a total disaster. He was shot before ever setting foot on campus at New Mexico State. He transferred away from there when Reggie Theus was gone. Sat last season for transfer regulations. Now he ends his sophomore season with a shot to the groin. And look, I know being in the NIT stinks, but that’s no reason to go around punching people in the crotch, Mr. Pope.↵↵One great still shot from another video angle after the jump that illustrates the pain inflicted on Cohadarevic.↵

↵UPDATE: Evidently something was in the air Tuesday night, or teams really hate the NIT, because there was a below-the-belt punch thrown in the Mississippi State game, too.↵

↵UPDATE 2/FINAL GROIN SHOT: Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez was fired today.
↵
↵UPDATE 3/ YOU THOUGHT IT WAS OVER? IT’S NOT: As part of a New York Times story on Gonzalez’s firing, news comes out that recently booted SHU player Robert Mitchell had a run-in with the law on Tuesday:↵↵⇥A Pirates player, Robert Mitchell, was arrested in Newark on Tuesday and charged with kidnapping, robbery, burglary and possession of a weapon, according to a law enforcement official in Essex County. Mitchell was accused along with another person of breaking into a home in South Orange, duct-taping eight people and stealing cash and personal items. The police have not identified the other person.↵↵↵And just so there’s no confusion, this incident actually took place after he was kicked off the team.↵
