NASCAR has come under increasing pressure to find a way to keep cars from getting airborne, and officials believe the upcoming move to a spoiler will help them achieve that goal.
Will Spoiler Help Keep Cars Grounded?
↵Nate Ryan of USA Today writes that NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton believes changing to a spoiler from the wing – which was maligned for its bad looks anyway – may reduce the chances of a flying car.
↵Pemberton was quoted in the story as saying:
↵↵“The wing is so efficient, the car can rotate quickly and doesn’t slow down. If the car had a spoiler, the drag would start to slow the car down as the driver rolled out of the gas. That’s one small part of it.”
↵↵Pemberton let it slip to reporters on Wednesday that the spoiler will make its debut at Martinsville next week.
